'A Bittersweet Day '


This image won honors from the Pennsylvania Associated Press Managing Editors in organization's 2009 Photo Excellence Awards. Was awarded second place in the Spot News category for daily newspapers of circulation between 30,000 and 75,000.

The photo,was published September 20,2008 of Justin Prettiman of Buffalo Township, a specialist with the Pennsylvania Army National Guard, hugging his daughter, Nicole, 3, before his deployment to Iraq.

Pinwheels for Prevention


Pinwheels on the lawn of the Washington County Courthouse represent a carefree childhood, according to the county Children and Youth Services agency, which planted a pinwheel "garden" to mark Child Abuse Prevention Month. The Pinwheels for Prevention campaign was begun in conjunction with Prevent Child Abuse America.
